About Us

The Stonewood Team is led by Matt Aitkenhead, the Managing Director and Ben Lang, the Commercial Director.

Stonewood started in 1972 as the family firm of Neill Aitkenhead, originally trading as NMA Builders who specialised in traditional craft based skills. Tim Saunders joined in 1979 making the business a partnership and in 1993 Neill’s son Matt started working for the company too. With continued growth and success in the following years, the decision was taken to create Stonewood Builders, the limited company, in 2001.  This coincided with Ben Lang taking up a full time position in the company in the same year.

While the fundamental values of quality and service remain at the core of the business, Stonewood has grown considerably in recent years and we now employ a direct workforce of over 70 qualified professionals from our base at Castle Combe. While we work mainly within a 100-mile radius of our base in Wiltshire, we have been asked to go all over the South of England and will happily do so if it’s economically viable for us and our clients.

We are proud of our wide range of professional and private clients who use our expertise across both traditional and contemporary designs, for period refurbishments, new build, smaller works and maintenance. In line with the focus on quality and detail, it's no surprise that Stonewood is renowned for its expertise in period buildings and as such enjoys long standing relationships with clients including the Badminton Estate, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, the Bathurst Estate and Bath's Royal Crescent Hotel in addition to a host of traditional residential properties. Our conservation prowess has also been utilised under the direction of the County Archaeologist, as we were selected as part of the team that conserved the 13th century mote and bailey keep that give Castle Combe its name.

In line with our growth and focused professionalism we're proud to be the builder of choice for Architects and Surveyors including Knight Frank and Carter Jonas; completing a range of projects ranging from £100K to in excess of £2 million, working on a magnificent range of distinctive period properties.
