What We Do

Given our focus on quality and detail, it’s no surprise that we are renowned for our expertise in period buildings and enjoy long standing relationships with clients including The Newt in Somerset, Bathurst Estate and Bath’s Royal Crescent Hotel, in addition to a host of traditional residential properties.

Our conservation prowess has also been used under the direction of the Country Archaeologist, as we were selected as part of the team that conserved the 13th century moat and bailey keep that gives Castle Combe (where we are based) its name.

Our exacting standards have helped us win multiple awards and respect across the industry. Over the past 50 years we have established and proven our practices, whilst maintaining a commitment to innovation and sustainability. We work across the full range of building disciplines on high specification projects for refurbishment, conversion and new builds.

We ensure detailed planning and exceptional project management, completing our projects on time and in budget. We are reliable and have a passion for what we do and how we do it. We have a highly skilled team with a talent for traditional and new techniques.

We pride ourselves on building strong and trusted relationship with clients, led by our commitment to integrity and honesty. We share our clients’ expectations and provide continued ongoing support with transparent project management. We take a flexible, personalised approach to each project to ensure it delivers the very best results.

At Stonewood, we offer intelligent and dynamic management throughout the building process. We listen to your needs and then use the best members of our team to suit the requirements of each individual project. We pride ourselves on building a strong working relationship with our clients from our very first meeting.

After your enquiry we will be approachable, responsive and professional. We will provide you with examples of our work (feel free to also browse the projects listed on this site) and the opportunity to meet some of our other clients.

When submitting a tender we will provide a thorough and comprehensive document using our in house estimating and bespoke planning tools. You will find our approach open and realistic, resulting in a completely transparent tender.

On agreement of our contract, we will spend time with you to detail what you can expect from us and what we will need from you. We also prepare a detailed work plan, risk assessment and safety plan for the project. This is the start of the meticulous planning that underpins the success of your project and ensures the smooth running of the works, minimum disruption and a positive, enjoyable experience for you.

Once on site, your project will be run by a designated Site Manager and overseen by a Contract Manager with the back up of a full time office team, including a Project Manager and Quantity Surveyor. We are proud of the level of continuity and communication we give to our clients so they are assured in our ability to carry out the work efficiently and professionally.

We strive to give continuity in the team itself, which is key for both client & employee satisfaction resulting in high quality results. By working on a project from start to finish our craftsmen develop a sense of ownership and pride in the task, which promotes a detailed understanding of the project itself and results in greater efficiency and a higher standard of workmanship.

We understand that once you see a project develop your views and aspirations can change. Because we are always on hand and in constant contact with you every step of the way, we can be responsive and flexible, making changes to the original plans as required.

Our service doesn’t stop on completion of your project. We give all our clients an official handover document and the option of using our expertise for ongoing maintenance. Our Handover and Maintenance Manuals contain instructions, useful contacts, guarantees and a full photographic record of the project.

At Stonewood, we balance an appreciation and commitment to traditional crafts with more contemporary material choices, design and construction methods. This allows us to deliver the ultimate in functionality, while retaining the beauty and charm of the buildings we work on.

So whether it’s specialist plumbing and heating systems, lighting design, ornate plastering techniques or traditional renovation specialists, you can ensure that everyone on site will work to the standards you desire.

With our roots in Wiltshire it’s no surprise that we bring a wealth of experience in working with the traditional materials historically used in the surrounding counties. Whether it’s Cotswold style cottages, hand made bricks, Bath stone ashlar buildings or oak and timber frames, we can advise on, restore or add complementary extensions to these beautiful buildings.

We are proud of our highly skilled carpenters. They understand how to work wood to it’s best and are specialists at oak timber framing, cut roofs, hardwood flooring, bespoke joinery, built in furniture, kitchens and fitting out. Our team has worked extensively on restoring period details to buildings and are renowned for their commitment to perfection.

Our experienced roofing experts can tackle even the most complex structure whether it’s for new build, repair or restoration. With the complete portfolio of traditional techniques at their disposal they can tackle listed buildings and conservation work with any roof covering with details such as swept valleys, dormers and feature lead work.

We employ a dedicated plastering team to offer our clients the best quality and traditional detailing many period properties require. We are specialists at traditional plastering techniques, including lime rendering and restoring detailed cornicing, while remaining at the forefront of modern plastering practices.

In addition to our wealth of experience and expertise on traditional buildings we are also at the forefront of the latest technological advances for both exterior and interior needs. From the latest in renewable energy or heating options, intelligent wiring and lighting design to major ground works and landscaping, we have the experience and a network of trusted partners who can meet your aspirations.

We are proud of our wide range of professional and private clients who use our expertise across both traditional and contemporary designs, for period refurbishments, new build, smaller works and maintenance.
